Gadgets: Great headphones at a nice price

Here's a question I get often: What is a good set of over-the-head headphones for traveling that won’t break the bank. And since traveling often includes flying, you want them to include some sort of noise-canceling.

That’s an easy one to answer, especially with the OneOdio new Focus A1 Pro hybrid active noise-canceling wireless headphones sitting on my desk. The headphones have soft padded on-ear cups attached to an adjustable headband. Inside each ear cup is a 40 mm driver to produce solid sound.

At a budget friendly $34.99, these headphones deliver surprisingly decent sound, making them a solid choice for anyone looking for a budget-friendly option with the needed features. Of course they aren’t going to produce the same sound as headphones costing five or 10 times that amount, but the sound is more than acceptable.

I’ve found that a good way to test noise-canceling is to wear them while the TV is on, but not connected to the TV with Bluetooth. Instead I want to see how much it’s eliminated while I listen to music. These shined, letting me enjoy my music without the TV being a distraction.

All the controls are on the right ear cup for power, pairing, volume and music selections. The foldable and portable USB-C charging headphones are rated to give you up to 50 hours of playtime with the ANC on and 70 hours with it off. A full charge of the 600 mAh internal battery takes about 2 1/2 hours. Multipoint pairing is supported on the Focus A1 Pro, as it features Bluetooth 6.0 connectivity.

When I first tested Vitesy’s original Shelfy a short time ago, I came away impressed. Its main function is to keep the food in your refrigerator fresh. In a short time I found there was no doubt food lasts longer, especially fruit. Now the upgrade Shelfy version adds better battery life and a new color option.

The Shelfy smart fridge purifier is a compact device (6.6 by 4.5 by 2.6 inches) that stays in your refrigerator. It keeps your food fresher by eliminating bacteria and odors and breaking down pollutants that accelerate ripening. The only time you take it out of the refrigerator is to give it a USB-C charge.

A quick fact supplied by Shelfy when I reviewed (and became a fan) of the original model in late 2024: “The world wastes about 2.5 billion tons of food every year, and the United States is the leader, discarding more food than any other country. This adds up to an approximate value of nearly $218 billion — the equivalent of 130 billion meals wasted annually in America.”

And this year they have added the fact that the average U.S. family of four loses nearly $3,000 worth of uneaten food annually. I can say first hand that I’m in that group. For the first model, I ran side-by-side tests of fresh fruit with and without the Shelfy and there was no doubt the device made a difference.

As mentioned, the new model adds better battery life and the option of turning on blue LED lighting to make photocatalysis more efficient. The Shelfy requires no filters; there is a built-in ceramic-coated filter that is washed with water now and then. With the Vitesy Hub it will show you the last time the filter was washed and other features such as when the battery needs to be charged.

The app also tells you how often your refrigerator doors have been opened and the temperature inside, and real-time fridge analytics. Within the app the modes can be changed, which is essential for the placement and the food its working to keep fresh. The modes include ECO for daily use, Crisper for a drawer with fruits and vegetables, and Performance for a temporary and intensive action.
